As the old guy steps away, pointing his gun at Rook ’ s head, Jase grabs, spins, and rams him headfirst into the wall. He winds the rope around Rook ’ s wrists and yanks.

When we ’ re subdued in the corner, Jase says, “ What now, Dad? ”

The old man grunts. “ They ’ ll be here any minute. Todd, go upstairs and look out. We don ’ t want to miss this boat. ”

The other blond trots up the cellar steps and disappears. In his wake, tense silence settles over the room. The three of us sit motionless. Jase and his father stand stiff-shouldered before us. The gun points at my head. My mind is whirring, but it ’ s not kicking up any ideas. I think of Essie, and what she ’ ll do when she finds out we ’ re taken. Because that ’ s the next thing that ’ s going to happen, I know it. She ’ ll come.
